Regardless of whether civilizations were ended by asteroids or the gravitational forces of large near passing objects or both, one or the other, the effect on this planet is the same.
Our planet sits in its position thanks to the gravitational force of the Sun and the other planets. It does this because there is a total lack of friction.
Adding friction such as an Asteroid crash is the cause of other effects.
To best explain the various effects imagine the planet as a billiard ball and has the very minimal friction on its bottom point touching the table. Any Pool or Billiard player knows that even the tiniest kiss by the cue ball at a given point will have an effect. There are many effects, including spinning in the same position or of course moving in a direction.
Unlike a billiard ball our planet does not have a minimal friction point, it has zero friction points other than the gravitational solar system ballance. Therefore a much smaller object would cause the same effect. The effect would depend entirely on the dimension of an Asteroid or object and the amount of 'kiss' or angle of impact. The effect could be great or small but an effect there will be.
In his book 'Magicians of the Gods' Graham Hancock explains the consequences of such an event and I agree that apart from initail and Tsunami damage the climate change effect and creation of mini ice ages and of course destruction of civilizations would occur.
What is little known is the effect on the Magma, an article I wrote for Graham Hancock about the Magama can be seen here; [grahamhancock.com]
The Magma like the sea is a liquid only its viscosity is different and its movements and currents more sluggish. An asteroid hitting the planets crust would have a reverberating effect within the Magma. An Asteroid big enough or angled enough to break the crust would cause Tsunamis within the Magma. The viscosity of the Magma is such that the effects take that much longer to heal or return to normaily and until it does there is a period of 'no time'
Regardless of the direction or angle of 'kiss' the planet will either speed up its spin or slow down its spin. At the same time the planet may move slightly into a different orbit either a few thousand meters nearer or further from the sun.
A change of spin is inevitable and simply means a day could be shorter or longer or a year could be a day longer or shorter but it matters not, what it means is that time at the moment of impact changes and after the blackness the survivors will see that the stars are going faster or slower, maybe an hour or day, who knows but for sure time changes.
Imagine an example of survivors who lived a 30 hour day and now its a 24 hour day or they lived in a 20 hour day but it's not important how many hours in a new day, whats important is that time has changed and entered into a no time zone and to get back on track survivors must know the time, the day, the month and to do that they need to construct clocks.
The cocks they constructed such as Stone Henge and very many others all over the world were constructed at the end of the 'no time' zone.
Many will comment that some of these clocks were built at different times and ages ranging from 13,000 through 36,000 nd on to 300,000 years ago and who am I to disagree, I know not their ages but it matters not, it simply means that these events are multiple and each time it happened the planet entered a 'no time' zone and new civilizations needed a new clock.
A correlation between the ages of the clocks and evidence of end of world events shortly prior to that could deconstruct the 'no time' zone.
