Perhaps someone decided that a well would provide a more permanent supply, and dug to find the source - they should have dug sideways.....

So the first construction is based on a flawed assumption, but nevertheless provided a source of water on the plateau - sometimes.

Why was the incredibly straight DP added to the bedrock, and where was it headed?

Clearly an exploratory SLANTED shaft covers a greater number of possible well sites than a single vertical shaft.

Subterranean chamber was 'unfinished' because it didn't succeed in finding a viable water source to store.

This is where it became a different proposition.
