Excavations, begun in September of 2020, of a three-millennia-old “lost city” near Luxor have revealed an extensive mudbrick complex of structures. The city dates from the time of Amenhotep III and was maintained under the reigns of Ay and Tutankhamun. Included in the finds discovered about the site are amulets, jewelry, decorative pottery, and tools associated with artistic and industrial metal and glass production.

Among the features of the city are the use of “zig-zag” walls. These sinusoidal constructs of single wythe bricks were quick to erect and structurally inherently sturdy. Often, they were employed to prevent sand from entering living areas or define courtyard spaces.

The video Inside “Lost” Egyptian City, provides a brief overview of the site’s scope and size.
