How did ancients double a cube. A remarkable coincidence. (no replies)

In the OLD days about 100 years ago to double the volume of a cube was time consuming to say the least.

For instance if a cube measured 1 foot or 1 metre in length then that easy as it's volume = 1 cubic whatever foot, metre, cubit.

Now double it to 2 cubic feet.

What is the length of the cube?

We have a calculator and know it is 1.25992... metres or feet ok.

Would the ancients have done that by hand, it would have taken time and they could have but it would take many calculations.?

No I don't think so though they Certainly knew how to BUT.I think.

They looked at the number 1.25992 and said gee it would be a great deal simpler to use 1.26 instead.

And back then to double 1 X 1.26 = 1.26 then cube it.

1.26 cubed is not a difficult calculation = 2.000376 close enough to 2.

What if we take a number the ancients and every child over 60 years of age new that is the approximate value for pi 22/7.

I remember first using it on a slate with chalk. Around 60 years ago !!! God.

22/7 = 3.142857143 now imagine that is the length of the side of a cube 31.04373178 cubic metres or better still inches.

Double it 3.142857143 using 1.26 = 39.6 inches.

You see I think the ancients developed a system of weights and measures based on this approximate for pi 22/7.

39.6 inches or 3.3 imperial was the length of the side of a box used to store grain etc the box was called
A tun.

For thought and If your inclined read.
