Great Pyramid with a Cement or Mortar Coating (no replies)

I have just finished reading Pochan (1978) “The mysteries of the great pyramids”. Clearly it is written by someone who had ‘boots on the ground’ — at the coal face, so to speak.
I learned a few things, disagree with a few things, need to fact check a few things…you know how it goes.

Pochan is quite adamant that G1 was coated with cement or mortar that was a solar-red in colour.

For several reasons I am not so sold on the idea:
— I can’t recall Herodotus mentioning it (yet he did mention hieroglyphs); and,
— I am under the impression that Tura limestone was of extremely high quality, so why would they wish to then coat it with plaster.

But…Petrie tried ever so hard to get the average side length of the G1 base up to the 440 mark but it still came up short despite his efforts.
Pochan left me wondering whether this layer of cement may account for Petrie’s missing inches.

I have no knowledge on the body of evidence for or against this assertion of a coating for G1.
What are your learned thoughts on his premise?
