The strictly geometric and abstract (or non-animal and non-anthropormorphic) Nazca line geoglyphs are known for their astonishing straight lines across variable terrain, the magnitude of which is only truly seen from above - almost as if a giant "laser pointer" has been projected on the earth, so the people knew exactly where to dig the soil to make a perfect line. The method by which they achieved the precision can be explained by demonstrative methods, however this does not diminish the accomplishment - especially considering the size and scope of the more extreme examples.
What is less known are the peripheral bits of information regarding the lines - namely the evidence of broken pottery shards at various points of the Nazca lines. This seems to indicate some sort of ritual behaviors as the pottery is often found to be unused (no food particles, etc) and also intentionally broken (which is observed from the type of fracturing).
Then there are the elongated skulls which have been found in the region, along with natural mummies, due to this environment. The dating on the lines is thought to be around 500 BC to 500 AD.
In comparison, the Chaco Canyon region is known for its arrangement of large monuments and underground temples (the circular kivas) across vast distances - hundreds of miles and so forth. For example the straight line of a wall in one temple will directly align to the straight line of a wall in another temple many hundreds of miles away, across many hills and other uneven bits of terrain, in the middle of a barren desert region. The dating for the Chaco Canyon region is generally thought to be around 1000 AD.
The Mystery of Chaco Canyon (excellent and very detailed documentary)
Elongated skulls and in fact evidence of polydactyl (six-fingered) skeletons have been found in areas of Chaco Canyon. There are also signs of massive rituals of pottery breaking at certain key areas of the complex, indicated by huge piles of shard remains.
Types of Artificial Cranial Deformation in the Eastern United States
A few years ago, evidence for chocolate of the mesoamerican variety was found in chaco canyon, along with certain kinds of pottery and artworks.
However the peripheral and incidental surrounding evidence seems a bit less profound to me - than the correlation between the huge kinds of geoglyphs at Nazca, and the same kinds of implicit geoglyphic alignments between actual megalithic structures or even city sized complexes, as well as petroglyphs and carvings which in themselves align to other kinds of cosmic phenomena. Most notably the 19 year metonic cycle of the moon is tracked on the "sun dagger", as well as other events such as the solstice and equinox.
The Anasazi peoples legends record that the Chaco Canyon people had migrated into the area from the South, and all of these indications seem to support those mythic histories.
The timeline would also correspond to a logical progression of understanding as well as the demonstrations of near absolute accuracy in geoglyphic design in the same style of a projected line which is only seen from high above . In Chaco Canyon, the understanding of alignments to cosmic phenomena is demonstrated in a much more abstract, yet practical way. Ultimately there may be much more to the designs and placement of the older Nazca lines as well, such as a map or symbol of some larger scene being indicated.
