Block Bearing Partial Khufu Cartouche

A granite block from the time of Khufu has been excavated from the western periphery of the ancient city of Heliopolis. Discovered by an Egyptian-German archaeological mission, amongst the foundations of the ‘Temple of the Sun’ in the Ain Shams (Eye of the Sun) suburb of Cairo, it is the first artifact of its kind. At present, it is unknown if the relic is a portion of a yet undiscovered royal structure from the reign of King Khufu, or a repurposed Giza element from the much later Ramesside Period.
