Egyptian Pulleys (1 reply)

No one knows when the Pulley was first discovered. There are still misconception of it today. It is always explained as a wheel and groove. Many people don't understand that a pulley does not require a wheel with a grove to work. The fundamental physics behind the "Pulley", which enables it to work, is simple. This is why it is referred to as a simple machine. Hang a rope between two tree limbs and attach something in the middle, which slides, and you have a pulley of 2:1 mechanical advantage. In essence, a movable pulley. They always associate this effect, with a wheel. If the Encyclopedias insist it requires a wheel, then what is the name of creating the same effect, without a wheel? Read the first paragraph here:

As long as there has been rope, the Pulley quickly followed. How many ways can you think of accidentally discovering the Pulley.

1. Hang your kill between two tree limbs, so you can gut and clean it.
2. Support a ceramic vessel over a fire, to heat the contents, without burning the rope.
3. Children playing with the rope, and attaching items to it...
4. Building a rope bridge.
5. Raising a sail on your boat. Eventually, you would encounter it.
6. Raising water up and out of a well. Eventually, you would encounter it.
7. The list goes on and on... How many can you think of?

All a Pulley requires, for a 2:1 mechanical advantage, is it being tied to one stationary end, something strung in the middle which slides, and pulled over another point, ie. limb. It does not require discovery of the wheel. All the wheel does, is reduce friction, and redirect the rope. A tree limb will also redirect the rope. To promote the Egyptian builders did not posses the rope and pulley, (be it inadvertently) is to cloak and misrepresent AE's ability to move heavy items, with less energy. As soon as man started pulling things, the Pulley 2:1 "effect" was quickly discovered. Be sure to watch this video, and tell me if you see a wheel.
