I was not even aware of Paleo polymorphic sculpture, until I began expanding on my collection of ancient art/weaponry. Since then, Ive opened up a whole new world of wonder. There is an odd symmetry, reminiscent of ancient Chinese "bi" stone sculpture, such as jade bi-symetrical pieces. These paleo pieces that I'm speaking of are generally on the larger side of "portable rock art", yet similarly effigies. I've seen similar from different parts of the world, from same period, but from what I have been able to find, there is not a lot of information about these sculptures. One very interesting thing is that most are specifically heads of creatures, and a duality , with one head facing one way, and one facing the other. So much so, that Ive gone from originally thinking they were completely natural forming, to realizing that they were most likely created, at least partially by design, by hand. Although, still not quite set on my opinion. It seems the general assumption is that these were completely natural forming fossils (which I am skeptical of), fossils found by ancient peoples and worked in order to bring out a desired artistic effect by "cleaning" the fossils in particular areas. This seems a bit more probable to me. The third option, and I think might actually be true at least for some of these, is that these were sculptures created prior to fossilization. The pieces I believe that could have been created in this way, generally have a fine coating of powdered iron ore, such as magnetite, and sand or ground mica. I have found images and information from around the world supporting this theory, and I also know that this mix of powdered iron ore and sand served as an ancient preservative, and actually works quite well. Again with this I think it is a bit hard to prove if this was something that occurred naturally or by design. Any personal information, or theories by anyone is appreciated. Also, any recommendations for a proper way to display images of these for others to see, such as if I should just set up a proper website, or if I should create a online account on something like Instagram or another similar platform will be helpful as well.
