12000 years ago There were 3 great civilizations around the globe with various levels of development around the globe.
It was more harmonious than today but there was still some political conflicts.

The one we often refer to as Atlantis was the most advanced and wanted to see if we were alone in the stars.
They sent out a signal and forgot about it. By the time someone replied, the politicians were squabbling amongst themselves and no-one wanted to tell the other civilizations about the coming crisis. Within days, Earth was attacked by the invaders with a series of meteors.
1 hit the Mediterranean basin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTo3ROeWnY8), creating the Sahara and Arabian deserts.
1 hit the gulf of Mexico, creating the deserts of America.
2 hit the coast of other highly populated areas.
The last one might have been something else that took out a massive island between Argentina and Antartica. This would have flash-frozen Antartica within years, if not days.

All the survivors were either not in the highly-populated areas or knew of the cataclysm in time.
The Richat Structure would have been buried by a sea of reeds once the tsunami waters subsided, as that is all that grows after a tsunami. However, this one was more permanent. The Egyptian desire to return home and their pilgrimage to their old homeland became mythologized in the book of the dead.

This is where Chariots of the Gods comes in.
The ETs basically enslaved humanity. They also brought in the moon when they attacked.
After a few centuries, they altered humanity to be a slave and food source. A "pedigree" group of humans was created in order to "maintain the herd".

It seems like the coast of Mauritania is the best place to see still-surviving, though very damaged, buildings from the time of the ancient apocalypse.
