Reading through The Sphinx Its History in the Light of Recent Excavations again, Hassan repeatedly gives the date of the 4th Dynasty as 2900BC and the OK at 2900-2675BC. He dates the 1st Dynasty to 3400BC. The problem for me is that this book was written in 1949, 40yrs after proposed revisions to the Sothic cycle based chronology. Selim Hassan was no slouch and one of the luminaries of the field and this is what he thought to be true at quite a relatively late date in the formation of Egyptological thought.
A question I think we all need to understand is when exactly did these dates change and why? What was it exactly that prompted the consensus to just chop off yet another 300yrs?
