A Study in Counterweights (no replies)

There seems to be much confusion concerning counterweights, and what they can and cannot accomplish.

Counterweight: a weight that is as heavy as something else, so that the two objects can balance. Referred to as reaching a State of Equilibrium.

By itself, it will not help in moving stones from a lower position to a higher location, as Houdin proposes.

I commend Dassault Systems in providing an excellent movie. A review of his movie will reveal the (Counterweight at the Upper end of the Harbor Ramp), as well as, the counterweight found inside the Grand Gallery.

These systems will only make it more difficult, and take twice the amount of time. For now, we will focus on the lower ramp counterweight. Understand, once the large stone counterweight is used to pull a stone up from the harbor a short distance, as the hole is only so deep, you are now required to pull back up the Counterweight. How is that done? A large team of men would need to be employed, to do this. Right? The Counterweight stone will not move up all by itself.

Well, if they have to do that, it renders the system useless. The same men could just as well, be employed, to pulling the stone up from the harbor.  There is no free energy in this system. The men could be either pulling the Counterweight back up, or they could simply be employed to pull the stone(s) up from the harbor, thus avoiding the entire system. The time you spend pulling the Counterweight backup is wasted.

There is no free energy in lifting mass/stones. You either apply your energy to one thing or the other.
