Regarding the carvings of "handbags" in Sumerian as well as other cultures.
I've noted that several of these depict humans or anamorphic creatures holding these bags and also seemingly plucking some sort of fruit from a plant. This would suggest to me that the bags are nothing more than a vessel to hold that fruit.
I believe it may imply the symbolic depiction of a God of fertility (for crops).
The absence of an accompanying plant would just be a simplification of the symbol, much like a cross without a figure nailed to it.
