As an offshoot from Manu's post about 'fineness' and a scientific need for a 'control', the following is an introductory exploration into what parameters and definitions should be established for the experiment of the making of a hand made vase. Said vase will be made and then scanned to establish the limits of precision possible from a Vase made with the materials/tools/techniques available to ancient Egyptians, confirmed by Egyptology, and clarified by Metrology.
Here is a VERY general outline starting point:
AGE OF STONE WORK TO REPLICATE:
Most ancient Vases were found in the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which is dated to 2,670 BCE?
MATERIAL USED FOR TOOLS:
Copper dates back to 3,000 BCE, and Bronze dates back to 3,000 BCE?
TOOLS AVAILABLE:
Copper Chisle – 3,000 BCE?
Core Drill – 3,000 BCE?
Plub Bob – 3,000 BCE?
Hinge – 3,000 BCE?
Saw – 3,100 BCE?
TOOLS UNAVAILABLE:
Lathe ?
Bearings ?
HAND MADE VASE DESIGN PARAMETERS:
Must be hollow - wall thickness less than 1/2"?
Must be curved to a minimum of 20 percentile from cylindrical to spherical?
Must have handle knobs interrupting curved side wall area - no drill holes in handle knobs necessary?
Must be minimum of 4" tall, 2" wide?
Must have an identifiable flange opening at top?
VASE MATERIAL:
Must be Made from an igneous stone with minimum hardness of 7 on Mohs scale?
Tell me what else we could add, and or where I'm incorrect in my stated parameters, and why.
