Neither of the words "Jesus" and "John" existed in that form before the early C17th AD. There was no distinct j or u in the English alphabet. I and v were used instead - English King James Version (1611): "THIS IS IESVS THE KING OF THE IEWES".
By adding these two (new) distinct letters - and thus expanding the English alphabet to 26 letters - the new forms Jesus and John appeared. There is a curiosity here: by adding the actual letter placements resulting we find J+O+H+N = 47 and J+E+S+U+S = 74. Mirrors, of a sort. By design?
